“Art that speaks without talking”

Surinam Maroon Art (SuMaArt) is a creation of the Suriname Maroons.  “ A beauty for the eyes and a delight to the spirit”.

SuMaArt is a unique, decorative, woodcarving art with meaningful symbols. The symbols are the primary characteristic of this art and are used to describe social activities, relationships and emotion. Because they lived in nature many symbols reflect their surrounding and the beings that lived in it. Like their ancestors they assign emotional value to aspects of their daily life (Sally and Richard Price, 1991). These symbols are expressions of the nature of men as spiritual beings.

The interior of Suriname is the main source for the creation of most symbols. Some symbols were influenced by images of the modern world. However the Maroons used their own interpretation to describe these images  according to the impression that they had made on them.
